2026 RMD Deadline: What Retirees Need to Do Before December 31

The holidays are approaching, and between family gatherings, shopping, and year-end celebrations, retirement planning might not be at the top of your list. But there’s one important deadline retirees shouldn’t overlook: December 31, 2026.

At KPC Financial Solutions, we believe staying ahead of financial deadlines is an important part of enjoying retirement with confidence.

What Is an RMD?

A Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) is the minimum amount the IRS generally requires you to withdraw each year from certain tax-deferred retirement accounts once you reach the applicable age. For individuals born between 1951 and 1959, that age is generally 73. For those born in 1960 or later, it is generally 75. Different rules may apply to inherited retirement accounts and certain employer-sponsored retirement plans.

These accounts typically include:

  • Traditional IRAs
  • 401(k) and 403(b) plans
  • SEP and SIMPLE IRAs
  • Certain inherited retirement accounts

Roth IRAs generally do not require withdrawals during the original owner’s lifetime.

Why December 31 Matters

For most retirees already taking RMDs, December 31, 2026, is the deadline to complete this year’s required withdrawal.

Turning 73 in 2026? You may have until April 1, 2027, to take your first RMD. However, delaying means you could have two RMDs in 2027, potentially increasing your taxable income.

Missing your RMD can also be costly. The IRS may impose a 25% penalty on the amount not withdrawn, potentially reduced to 10% if corrected within the required timeframe.

Your Year-End RMD Checklist

Before the year ends, consider these important steps:

  1. Review All Retirement Accounts. Make sure you haven’t overlooked an IRA, old employer-sponsored retirement account, or inherited IRA.
  2. Confirm Your Withdrawal Amount. RMDs are generally calculated using your December 31, 2025, account balances and applicable IRS life expectancy factors.
  3. Consider the Tax Impact. RMDs can affect your taxable income, Social Security taxation, and potentially Medicare premiums.
  4. Explore Charitable Giving. If you’re eligible, a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) made directly from your IRA to a qualifying charity may satisfy part or all of your RMD while potentially reducing taxable income.
